About Dalton Plumbing & Gas

Started in 2011 with one ute and a mobile phone. Fourteen years later there are eight vans on the road and we still answer that same number.

Our story

A Newcastle business, run by people who live here

Craig Dalton served his apprenticeship in Wallsend in 1998 and spent twelve years working for other people. He got sick of two things: being told to upsell customers work they didn't need, and turning up to jobs where the previous plumber had cut corners because they were paid by the job rather than paid properly.

So in 2011 he started Dalton Plumbing & Gas with a second-hand ute, a set of tools and a rule that hasn't changed since — quote a fair fixed price, do the job properly, and tell the customer the truth even when it costs you the sale.

That last one matters more than it sounds. There is a lot of money in telling someone their hot water system is finished when it needs a $310 anode. We've built a business on not doing that, and it's why about 60% of our work now comes from people who were referred by a neighbour, a family member or their real estate agent.

We're not the cheapest plumber in Newcastle and we don't try to be. We pay our tradesmen properly, we carry real stock on the vans, and we come back for free if something we did goes wrong. That costs money, and it's built into the price.

What we actually promise

Plenty of trade websites list values that mean nothing. Here's what ours actually commit us to:

  • A fixed price before we start. In writing, on our tablet, signed by you. If the job turns out harder than it looked, that's our problem, not your invoice.
  • Two hour arrival windows. Not "sometime Tuesday". And a text with the plumber's name and photo when they're on the way.
  • We'll tell you when not to spend money. If a repair makes more sense than a replacement, we'll say so, even though the replacement pays us more.
  • Licensed tradesmen only. Every person who works on your place is individually licensed. We don't send apprentices out alone on someone else's ticket.
  • We come back for free. 12 months on workmanship. If it fails, we fix it, and we don't argue about whose fault it was.

How the business has grown

  1. 2011 — One ute, one plumber

Craig starts out working from home in Cardiff. First job was a blocked drain in Boolaroo for $140.

  2. 2014 — First apprentice, second van

Word of mouth outgrows one person. Jarrod starts his apprenticeship and is still with us today as our lead drainage tech.

  3. 2017 — Moved into the Cardiff workshop

Room to hold real stock, which is what made same day hot water changeovers possible.

  4. 2019 — Added CCTV and jetting gear

Truck-mounted jetter and colour CCTV brought drain work in house instead of subcontracting it out.

  5. 2022 — Started pipe relining

Trained and equipped for no-dig relining, so customers stopped having to choose between a wrecked driveway and a recurring blockage.

  6. 2025 — Eight vans, 11,400 jobs

Still family owned. Still the same phone number. Craig still does emergency call-outs on the roster like everyone else.

Who'll turn up at your place

Every one of them is individually licensed, police checked and has been with us at least two years.

Lic. 249187C

Jarrod Neale

Lead Drainage Technician

Started as our first apprentice in 2014. Runs the jetter and the CCTV, and has seen the inside of most sewers in Newcastle.

Lic. 312884C

Dean Whitlock

Gas & Hot Water Specialist

Twenty years on gas appliances and hot water. If it's an obscure unit, Dean has probably worked on one.

Lic. 205471C

Sam Petrovic

Renovation & Fit-Off

Handles our bathroom and kitchen work. Meticulous with fit-off, which is the bit everyone actually looks at.

Lic. 288013C

Plus four more licensed plumbers and two apprentices. Our apprentices always work alongside a licensed tradesman — never on their own, and never signing off their own work.

Why we hold stock

The reason we finish 94% of jobs on the first visit

Most plumbing companies run lean vans. It's cheaper — less capital tied up in stock, less to manage. The cost lands on you instead, as a second call-out and another day off work waiting around.

We do it the other way. Every van carries the common hot water units, the tapware and cartridges we fit most often, a full range of copper and PEX, and the fittings for 90% of what we see. It ties up a lot of money in stock sitting in vans.

The result is that 94% of our jobs are finished in one visit. That's the number we're proudest of, and it's the one that actually saves you money.
