Before you call — two things worth checking
Every so often we drive out to a $220 call and the fix takes thirty seconds. Save yourself the money and check these first:
- Electric system: check the fuse box. Hot water usually sits on its own circuit breaker, often labelled "HWS" or "off peak". If it's tripped, flick it back on and give it a few hours to heat.
- Gas system: check the pilot light if it's an older unit, and make sure the isolation valve on the gas line hasn't been knocked shut. Also check other gas appliances work — if the whole house has no gas, it's a supply problem, not your hot water.
Still nothing? That's a genuine fault and it's worth getting looked at properly.

Most hot water failures are one of a handful of parts, and most of those are far cheaper than a new system:

Choosing a new system
If it does need replacing, the type you pick matters more than the brand. Rough guide for a Newcastle household:

Hot water questions
Electric and gas storage tanks generally give you 10 to 12 years. Continuous flow gas units often run 15 to 20. Heat pumps sit around 10 to 15 depending on how hard they work.
Replacing the sacrificial anode every 5 years or so can add years to a storage tank's life, and it's a fraction of the cost of a new unit. Almost nobody does it, which is why most tanks die of corrosion.
A small amount during the heating cycle is completely normal — that's the temperature and pressure relief valve doing its job as the water expands. A cupful a day is fine.
A constant stream, or enough to keep a patch of ground permanently wet, means the valve has failed or the mains pressure is too high. Both are cheap fixes, and both waste a surprising amount of water if left.
Usually yes. Going electric to gas needs a gas line run to the unit's location, which is straightforward if gas is already connected to the house. Going electric to heat pump is often close to a straight swap since it uses the same electrical supply.

Yes, and we'll quote it as install-only. Two things to be aware of: the manufacturer's warranty usually requires licensed installation and registration, which we handle; and if the unit turns out to be the wrong type or size for your setup, you're stuck with it.
